Watch: This West Bengal tourism ad starring Shah Rukh Khan is the sweetest thing you will see!
These days it seems like there is a Bengali everywhere, in fact, even in our Mumbai-based newsroom, it’s the dominant language. Despite the fact that Bengalis have turned up everywhere in the world, we continue to pine for home and are almost obsessed with home. From searching for a decent Kolkata-style kathi roll to visiting pandals during Pujo season (if we can’t make it home), Bengalis are obsessed with their culture.
And if you’re a Bengali stuck in any other part of the country or world, this new video by West Bengal tourism will take you home. The video shows a foreigner (perhaps inspired by the cult classic Mem Bou) do typical Bong things like visiting a classic Bengali wedding or taking the traditional yellow taxi or even riff through books on College Street.
The video goes to lengths to paint Bengal as a beautiful destination showcasing all things Bengal hold dear. The video showcases the beatific locations in Bengal from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal, from the forests to the bylanes. There is Rabindrasangeet playing in the background, Bauls (so beloved by Bob Dylan) and our charming blonde visitor digging into bhetki maacher paturi.
We get to see the Toy Train in Darjeeling, a trip to the Puja house and ends with a major whammy with Bengal’s adopted son Shah Rukh Khan sweeping the visit of her feet and reciting Tagore’s immortal lines: “Ami chini go chini tomare ogo bideshini” (O, the lady from abroad, you are known to me).
While some purists will probably cry about SRK’s presence in said video, if Amitabh can represent Gujarat, there’s nothing wrong with Shah Rukh selling Bengal. And it’s not like he doesn’t have an emotional attachment to the city who consider him their own because of his ownership of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.
Check out the amazing video below and if you’re Bengali, you will probably rush to book your tickets home right now.
